Global Tobacco Market Seeing Trend towards Less Tar
The general global picture for tobacco is of the global market continuing to shift towards cigarettes delivering less tar, though this does not apply to all of the leading cigarette markets. In Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Argentina, over 90% of duty paid cigarettes consumed are high tar. In contrast, in France, Germany, Netherlands and Turkey, no high tar cigarettes are consumed due to government legislation and, looking ahead, legislation rather than consumer taste will be the primary driver.
At the other end of the scale, Japan is the country with the biggest share of ultra low tar cigarettes with some 39% of total sales in 2011, followed by Canada (16% ultra low tar) Italy (14%), and Greece and South Africa (11%). Mid tar cigarettes are most popular in Nigeria, Venezuela, Turkey and Spain (all 90% or more of the total market by volume).
China, three other large population Asian markets, and Iran, were the main cigarette market drivers in terms of volumes added though China dwarfs the rest.
Two of the five markets losing the most volume in terms of actual sticks - Japan and the US - are in long-term decline. Spain and Russia were hit by economic pressure on consumers and also by price rises, as was Japan.
Iran and Spain recorded the biggest proportional rises and falls among the world's 30 bn stick plus countries.
