The boutique brand with the bird is back. Followers of lesser-known cigar companies might remember Chogüí, the small line of Dominican cigars with a curious little bird on the label. It disappeared in 2018, but brand owner Victor Nicolás has brought it back into production. And he’s done it with the help of Venture 1492, the distribution and consultation company started by Kyle Gellis of Warped Cigars.?
“We started working mid-2021 on a relaunch of the brand,” says Nicolás, who cited FDA regulations as one of the reasons why he ceased production four years ago. The cigar is called Chogüí Dos77 Corojo, named for the sun-grown, Dominican Corojo wrapper that cloaks the all-Dominican blend. Tobacco for the Dos77 Corojo was procured from leaf grower Leo Reyes, and the cigars are made in the Dominican Republic at the Manufactura Rivas factory.?
This is not the same blend as the original. According to Nicolás, there’s a leaf of medio tiempo tobacco in the filler from a Piloto Cubano varietal. The Corojo wrapper is also new, as is some Havana Vuelta Arriba (HVA), and Nicolás considers these changes to be improvements to his previous cigar.
Chogüí Dos77 Corojo is re-entering the market in one size, a robusto called Rogusto Extra that measures 5 1/2 inches long by 50 ring gauge. Shipping to retailers next week, they come in 20-count boxes and have suggested retail prices of $12 each.
Gellis’ Venture 1492 company, which distributes Chogüí, specializes in small, fledgling companies like this. When asked why had an interest in taking on this brand in particular, Gellis responded: “His following has come back…h(huán)e is going to start a new shift toward the Dominican Republic.”
